DATA CONTROL EXPANSION

👉 Meta and LinkedIn: Changes in How Data Works

Meta and LinkedIn are making important updates that affect how your data is handled. Meta, in response to the Digital Markets Act (DMA), is giving users in the EU more control over their data. This means they can separate their Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger accounts. Meanwhile, LinkedIn is saying goodbye to Lookalike Audiences, changing how ads reach people, starting from February 29, 2024.

Let's break it down:

🔒 Meta's EU Privacy Boost & Ad Challenges:

  • To follow the DMA rules, Meta is letting EU users choose how they share their data. This allows them to keep Facebook and Instagram accounts separate.

  • Meta is doing this to keep your data private, especially after a study found that, on average, 2,230 companies were sharing information about each user with Facebook.

  • Now, in the EU, EEA, and Switzerland, people can use Instagram and Facebook with ads for free. Or they can pay for a subscription to remove ads and ensure their data isn't used for advertising. This change can affect advertisers, giving them a choice to connect or disconnect Facebook and Instagram accounts, which can impact how targeted ads work.

  • The DMA is about making sure big online platforms play fair and comes into effect in March.

🧑‍🤝‍🧑 LinkedIn’s Lookalike Audience Shift:

From February 29, 2024, LinkedIn is saying goodbye to Lookalike Audiences. But don't worry, there are still similar options within LinkedIn’s system:

  • "Audience Expansion" is another choice, connecting you with users who share similar interests.

The Bottom Line:

Meta is following strict EU data laws, and LinkedIn is changing how ads reach people. For marketers, this means facing challenges and finding new opportunities. So, embrace the data shift – it's not just about following rules; it's a chance to transform how you connect with your audience.
